What are gum diseases?

Gum diseases are infections that affect the gums. Gum infections cause the gums to become red, swollen and bleed.

If left untreated, simple gingivitis, which only affects the gums, can progress and develop into a more serious gum disease called periodontitis. Periodontitis is the spread of inflammation in the gums to the tooth roots and surrounding tissues, causing bone loss.

What causes bleeding gums?

Bleeding gums is the most important symptom of gum disease. If you notice bleeding when brushing or flossing, this is a sign that the gums are inflamed. Other symptoms include redness, swelling, tenderness and receding gums.

The main cause of gum disease is a layer of bacteria that accumulates on the teeth. This layer is called plaque. However, gingival disease also occurs with factors such as overflowing fillings, caries, prostheses with poor gingival harmony.

Factors affecting general health such as diabetes, some blood diseases, nutritional disorders and hormonal changes can also cause bleeding gums and gingival diseases.

What is the treatment of bleeding gums and gingival diseases?

The cause of gingival bleeding is determined and treatment is performed to correct it.

*Tartar cleaning is performed, the patient is told how to brush their teeth, deep cleaning or surgical procedures can be performed if necessary.

*Caries in the teeth are treated, fillings and prostheses that cause bleeding are replaced.

* If bleeding is thought to be related to general health status, the patient is referred to a physician.

If gum diseases are neglected, they can progress and cause tooth loss. It is very important to have regular check-ups with your dentist, to protect your gum health and to detect possible problems early.
